HOTEL BUZZ: Tasmania’s Saffire Jewel

Australia welcomes its newest luxury hotel on the picturesque Freycinet Peninsula in Tasmania.

A big welcome to Australia’s newest luxury hotel, Saffire, located on the picturesque East Coast of Tasmania near Freycinet, just two hours from Hobart. Sexy, sleek and modern, the resort is as minimal in design as is its impact on the landscape. In 2003, the surrounding area became the first plastic bag-free town in Australia following an initiative by a local baker to protect the ecological integrity of the region. Saffire has carefully maintained these environmental values. Conceived in a free flowing, organic form, the buildings evoke a strong amphibious connection to the sea through details and references to waves, sea creatures, and sand dunes that inspire a sense of peace and calm.

Each of the 20-luxury suites showcase stunning sweeping views of Great Oyster Bay and the Hazards Mountains with complete privacy from neighboring rooms. The spacious digs feature an eclectic mix of traditional and contemporary furnishings, with locally made timber pieces alongside mid-century classics such as Charles and Ray Eames and Herman Miller vintage chairs. Comfort, space and style are signature elements that run throughout the Saffire experience from the bedroom to the spa and the dining room.

The hotel’s Palate Restaurant and Lounge Bar offer some of Tasmania’s freshest produce, finest wines, and local brews along with breathtaking panoramic views. An aquaculture haven, the area is rife with crayfish, scallops and deep-sea fish which arrive fresh off the local boats, while plump, succulent oysters are farmed on Saffire’s doorstep in the pristine waters of Great Oyster Bay.

Not to be missed are the sprinklings of pure blue sapphire dust in the signature Diamond, Gold and Sapphire facials at the deluxe Spa Saffire facilities. The on-site gym, as well as yoga and mediation classes, allows guests to maintain their own equilibrium in union with the perfectly balanced architectural details. Beyond the shores of Saffire, exclusive Signature Experiences have been specially developed accessing little-known areas of the Freycinet Peninsula, as well as a range of other activities that can be tailored to suit guests’ desires, from whale watching to walking on the powder white sand of Wineglass Bay with a wine glass in hand, of course. Just watch out for Neptune’s fork as this has to be one of his favorite haunts.

Rates: A Special Preview Opening rate is available at AU$1250 per/suite per/night for up to two people, all inclusive. Click here for details. For bookings and inquiries, email: ea@saffire-freycinet.com.au or phone +61 3 6256 7888 or 1800 SAFFIRE (1800 723 347).
