Lumina Tasmania: A Winter of Festivals

A world apart, not a world away.

Tasmania is the place to be this winter (in the Southern hemisphere) with the inaugural launch of Lumina, A Winter of Festivals. This four-month program illuminates all corners of Tasmania; celebrating arts, food and wine, culture and sport with more than 60 Lumina cultural events planned from May to August 2010 all across the 180 miles long by 190 miles wide island state. Visitors can enjoy the fine flavors of Savour Tasmania–an epicurean festival showcasing the island’s finest food and produce through the skills of leading international and Australian chefs in a host of culinary events. There are also world-class creative performances that encompasses theatre, dance, opera, visual arts, writing, installation and more during Junction Arts Festival, performances by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, a Festival of Broadway with Stephen Schwartz (of ‘Wicked’ fame), and the excitement of live AFL action at the Aurora Stadium. The Festival of Voices brings the world of singing to Hobart, featuring around 40 events over five days. And the Australian Shakespeare Festival will also participate in this event as well as scores of other smaller free events organized by local communities up and down the countryside. It’s a party down under and we love what this little heart-shaped island is up to this cool season.

Travelers can fly to Tasmania on Jetstar, Virgin Blue, Qantas, Tiger Airways or Rex Airlines, or take the Spirit of Tasmania ferry from Sydney (NSW) or Melbourne (VIC) to East Devonport (TAS).
