Sierra Nevada Resort Elevates the Eating and Sleeping Scene at MAMMOTH

Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth has always been more of a ski town than a dining destination, but Jim Demetriades is trying to change that image. Demetriades owns the newly remodeled Sierra Nevada Resort  in Mammoth Lakes, CA, which just officially reopened on February 1st after a multi-million dollar, three-year renovation. What used to be a Rodeway Inn is now a rustic-chic lodge with family-friendly amenities and three restaurants that have enhanced the Mammoth scene.

The resort boasts 149 rooms in all, but the best options are the private chalets and brand-new fireplace suites. There’s a concerted effort to keep you warm during your stay with heated floors and toilet seats in the bathrooms and stone fireplaces that sit in front of cozy leather chairs. If you’re looking to get warmer still, take up residence in the second floor sauna or run a few yards out to the largest jacuzzi in Mammoth, which happens to seat twenty-four of your closest friends.

Red Latern Restaurant Sierra Nevada Resort Mammoth LakesYou’ll find a very mountain-inspired colorscape throughout the property but the colors change when you head to those on-site restaurants. Rafters is your basic three-meal-a-day go-to for classic breakfast options, sandwiches and salads at lunch, and a more extensive Italian-inspired menu at dinner. Red Lantern serves upscale Chinese food and they’re soon expanding to a more pan-Asian menu with the help of a Nobu-trained chef. Their cocktails made with classic Asian ingredients like ginger and lychee are big draws, as are Chinese-American staples like orange chicken and sweet-and-sour pork.

Just upstairs from Red Lantern is Jimmy’s Taverna, an inviting Greek restaurant with food that goes well beyond what you’d expect from a mountain town. Moussaka, saganaki, and spanakopita – all of the favorites are here. While Mammoth may be out in the Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains, the restaurant still gets deliveries of the freshest ingredients every day. In fact, that ethos is reflected in just about every aspect of the property: it may be out of the way, but you’ll have an entirely fresh experience at the Sierra Nevada Resort.
