EAT
HUI YUAN
Hui Yuan Vegetarian Restaurant is a vegan-friendly Chinese restaurant full of meat-free Shanghainese classics. The no-frills diner is usually crowded, a testament to their delicious menu. Most of the food contains mock meats with an array of fresh vegetables cooked in all ways – braised, stir-fried, steamed. And don’t miss out on tasting the dumplings Shanghai is famous for, meat-free of course!

IF VEGAN
This is an all-vegan restaurant serving fusion dishes inspired by both Western and Chinese cuisine. Part coffee bar, part flower shop and part restaurant, If Vegan is the ideal place to drop by for a plant-based meal. You will find some classic Shanghainese tofu-based dishes on their menu, as well as a range of healthy western dishes from salads to pastas.

PLAY
RIINK
Neon lights, roller skates and cocktails are plentiful here. Shanghai loves a themed bar and RIINK brings together a trifecta of fun that feels distinctly ’80s with a modern upgrade. Rent a pair of skates with flashing wheels and take a spin around the oval rink to tunes spun by a DJ.

SPEAK LOW
This three-level speakeasy been perfecting the art of the cocktail in Shanghai since it opened in 2014. Classics can be had here, but it’s the sheer brilliance of creations such as the Parmigiano Sour (made with black pepper, egg, Sauternes, lemon tea, Pisco and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese) that turns heads and pleases palates. Enter through Ocho, a bar tools store, then look for the secret passage

BREATHE
BODY AND SOUL YOGA CLUB
Body and Soul offers a wide range of yoga schools and levels from beginner to advanced. Experienced yogis may be interested in exploring kriya, kunjal kriya, pranayama, meditation, or nidra yoga, while expectant mothers can centre their bodies with prenatal yoga. There are also hot yoga classes, anti-aging yoga classes, back pain therapy, and more.
JADE BUDDHA TEMPLE SILENT WEEKEND RETREAT
Once a month the Jade Buddha Temple offers overnight silent retreat stays.
This is the city’s most zen slumber party ever: a 30-hour silent retreat open to anyone interested in learning to meditate with the monks. Set aside your technology and inherent self-absorption for a full weekend of solitude.
