Glitterati Head to the Hotel Punta Tragara on the Isle of Capri

The Annual “Le Conversazioni – Writers in Conversation” literary festival is set to take place for the sixth year running at the Hotel Punta Tragara from June 24- July 3.

For Italophiles and jet-set literati, where better to convene than on the legendary island of Capri where writers such as Thomas Mann, Somerset Maugham, and Graham Greene were all inspired by la dolce vita, particularly during the latter half of the 19th century when it became one of the most sought after destinations among young travelers participating in the Grand Tour of Europe. This summer, the famous Hotel Punta Tragara, part of the Manfredi Fine Hotel Collection, will host the sixth annual Le Conversazioni – Writers in Conversation literary festival from June 24 – July 3, attracting a new generation of budding writers and established authors. Featuring a series of interviews and thoughtful discussions between some of the world’s most influential writers today, the event will take place over two consecutive weekends.

For decades, the Hotel Punta Tragara has been a favorite meeting point for intellectuals and artists. Situated on the cliffs overlooking the landmark Faraglioni sea stacks, the 44-room property was conceived by the renowned architect Le Corbusier, and is the perfect setting for the event having welcomed many artists, writers and world famous personalities such as Eisenhower, Churchill and Frank Sinatra. The rich history of the building is evident throughout the hotel, in which archaeological finds, tapestries and antique furniture blend in with a pared down contemporary style. The hotel recently added the UNICA Beauty & SPA with four treatment rooms and a range of spa treatments from the famous Guinot brand. The hotel’s “Monzù” Restaurant, headed by Chef Arcucci, features a menu of fresh, seasonal dishes that take inspiration from the traditional cuisine of Capri and Naples. The hotel offers complete privacy in a sophisticated atmosphere, yet all the buzz of the famous “Piazzetta” is just a ten-minute walk away.

Le Conversazioni will take place in the hotel’s Piazzetta Tragara at sunset, where guests as well as the public will be welcome to take part in complimentary talks by invited authors. Guests of this year’s festival include a host of renowned American writers such as Jonathan Safran Foer (Everything is Illuminated, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close); Nicole Krauss (History of Love, Great House); Cathleen Schine (Rameau’s Niece, The Evolution of Jane); Donna Tartt (The Secret History, The Little Friend); and the film critic, essayist and novelist Phillip Lopate. The festival is the brainchild of Antonio Monda, professor of film at New York University, and Davide Azzolini, director of the Naples Cinema Festival, who recently kicked off this year’s Le Conversazioni in New York at The Morgan Public Library during “An Evening with Jonathan Franzen and Paul Schrader,” moderated by Antonio Monda. The two writers participated in a lively discussion about the films and books that have most influenced them, and the relationship between words and image, before heading off to Capri this summer.
