SNOCRU: Best App to “Turn on the Mountains”

Snowy Mountains

Finding the Perfect Powder Day and Your Buddies Just Got Easier

Now that we are connected to anyone, anywhere, at anytime, why not be connected to the mountains too? SNOCRU, a free mobile app for the iPhone, makes sure you know everything that’s happening on your favorite slopes, from powder dumps and bluebird days, to where your crew is carving turns and the best après ski haunts.

Ed Lewis, who founded SNOCRU in December 2009, got the idea to create an app that connected skiers and boarders after a scheduled ski vacation was canceled last minute. “I was supposed to go on a skiing trip with a good friend of mine. Unfortunately he had to bail on the trip last minute because of a grad school project…So when I started to do some research, there wasn’t anything I could find other than a few ski and snowboard clubs. So I started the long process of creating SNOCRU.”

Snocru AppSNOCRU lets you “turn the mountains on” and get access to snow conditions all over the globe. Users can find the nearest restaurant, bar, and hotel and then see if anyone they know is at a specific location. The app also lets you track your day on the slope and post on Facebook and Twitter to share your adventures with the friends and family who are lazing on the couch by the fire.

Skiers and boarders can also record their mountain stats like maximum speed, vertical feet, total runs, and distance traveled. “My favorite part of SNOCRU is the ‘Near Me’ button,” explains Lewis. “Near Me provides SNOCRU with real time connectivity, anywhere you are. I can see where my friends are in real time and message them all.”

Lewis plans to continue enhancing the user experience, and hopefully will translate the technology to other sports and lifestyle activities in the future.

Snocru was voted the number one snowboarding app by Snowboard Magazine and is the first micro-social app built for the entire snow sports industry. Preview the app or get connected on Facebook and Twitter.

Enjoy the snow!
